67 κράτη υπέγραψαν τη Συνθήκη για την Ανοικτή Θάλασσα

Εξήντα επτά κράτη υπέγραψαν χθες Τετάρτη τη Συνθήκη για την Ανοικτή Θάλασσα, η οποία αποσκοπεί στην προστασία των ωκεανών, την αντιμετώπιση της υποβάθμισης του περιβάλλοντος, την καταπολέμηση της κλιματικής αλλαγής και την πρόληψη της απώλειας βιοποικιλότητας.

Οι διαπραγματεύσεις ολοκληρώθηκαν τον Μάρτιο και η συμφωνία υιοθετήθηκε από τον ΟΗΕ τον Ιούνιο. Θεωρείται καθοριστικής σημασίας σε ό,τι αφορά την επίτευξη του στόχου να τεθεί υπό καθεστώς προστασίας το 30% των εδαφών και των ωκεανών του πλανήτη έως το 2030 - στόχος ευρύτερα γνωστός ως «30 μέχρι το 30».

Παρά τις σχεδόν 70 υπογραφές στη Γενική Συνέλευση του ΟΗΕ, η συνθήκη πρέπει να επικυρωθεί από τουλάχιστον 60 χώρες - σε εθνικό επίπεδο - προκειμένου να τεθεί σε ισχύ.

«Με την υπογραφή της Συνθήκης για την Ανοικτή Θάλασσα, μπορούμε να προστατεύσουμε τους ωκεανούς από τις ανθρώπινες πιέσεις και να πλησιάσουμε πιο κοντά στον στόχο μας για την προστασία τουλάχιστον 30% του πλανήτη έως το 2030», δήλωσε ο επίτροπος Περιβάλλοντος Βιργκίνιους Σινκεβίτσιους.

Για «καθαρά συμβολική στιγμή» έκανε λόγο ο προσωρινός επικεφαλής της Greenpeace International Μαντς Κρίστενσεν. «Τώρα οι πολιτικοί πρέπει να φέρουν τη συνθήκη στις πατρίδες τους και να διασφαλίσουν ότι θα επικυρωθεί σε χρόνο ρεκόρ», τόνισε.
