Πέθανε ο νομπελίστας φυσικός Πίτερ Χιγκς

Ο Βρετανός φυσικός Πίτερ Χιγκς, βραβευμένος με Νόμπελ Φυσικής το 2013 για το «Σωματίδιο Χιγκς», που θεωρείται το θεμελιώδες στοιχείο της θεμελιώδους δομής της ύλης, πέθανε χθες σε ηλικία 94 ετών, ανακοίνωσε σήμερα το Πανεπιστήμιο του Εδιμβούργου. Το CERN αποχαιρετά τον Πίτερ Χιγκς

«Πέθανε ήσυχα στο σπίτι του τη Δευτέρα 8 Απριλίου μετά από σύντομη ασθένεια», ανέφερε το Πανεπιστήμιο σε ανακοίνωσή του.

Με μια ανάρτηση στα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης, ο Ευρωπαϊκός Οργανισμός Πυρηνικών Ερευνών (CERN), που επιβεβαίωσε με τα πειράματά του την ανακάλυψη του μποζονίου Χιγκς το 2012, αποχαιρετά τον νομπελίστα φυσικό, Πίτερ Χιγκς.

«Εκτός από την εξαιρετική συνεισφορά του στη σωματιδιακή φυσική, ο Πίτερ ήταν ένας πολύ ξεχωριστός άνθρωπος, μια απίστευτα εμπνευσμένη φιγούρα για τους φυσικούς σε όλο τον κόσμο, ένας άνθρωπος με σπάνια σεμνότητα, ένας σπουδαίος δάσκαλος και κάποιος που εξήγησε τη Φυσική με έναν πολύ απλό και συνάμα βαθύ τρόπο. Ένα σημαντικό κομμάτι της ιστορίας και των επιτευγμάτων του CERN συνδέεται με αυτόν. Είμαι πολύ λυπημένη και θα μου λείψει πολύ», σημειώνει στην ανακοίνωση η γενική διευθύντρια του CERN, Φαμπιόλα Τζιανότι.
