Πρόκριση με ανατροπή για Σάκκαρη

Προ ενός εντελώς απρόσμενου αποκλεισμού βρέθηκε η Μαρία Σάκκαρη (Νο33) αλλά μόλις βρήκε τα «πατήματά» της, έκανε την ανατροπή και πέρασε στον δεύτερο γύρο του US Open νικώντας 2-1 σετ την Αμερικανή Ρόμπιν Μοντγκόμερι (Νο187 στον κόσμο) στη Νέα Υόρκη.

Η νεαρή (22 ετών) πήρε το πρώτο σετ 6-2 και προηγήθηκε στο δεύτερο με 4-0 φέρνοντας την Ελληνίδα πρωταθλήτρια με την πλάτη στον τοίχο. όμως στο σημείο εκείνο η Σάκκαρη αντεπιτέθηκε, πήρε πέντε συνεχόμενα games, ισοφάρισε με 7-5 και πλέον όλα έγιναν πιο εύκολα. Στο τρίτο σετ η ψυχολογία είχε αλλάξει πλέον στρατόπεδο και η Ελληνίδα επιβεβαιώνοντας την ανωτερότητά της επικράτησε εύκολα 6-2. Αύριο στον Β΄ γύρο υα αντιμετωπίσει την Ουκρανή Γιούλια Σταροντούμπσεβα (Νο58).
